The Architectural Awards are very important for the architectural industry, and for innovative architectural design in general, and as an organization responsible for global architectural awarding, "Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture" believes that this award will lead to unexpected change in the architectural design of mosques and will end the developed conceptuality of mosques. However, because it is relatively new, both intellectuals and practitioners are still uncertain about the aims of this award either because of being targeting mosques or because of the process of reviewing those nominated designs. So, "Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture – AFAMA" is currently working on decreasing the percentage of this "uncertainty" by clearly defining aims and requirements of this award, and this is what AFAMA is planning to achieve within the upcoming 3rd cycle (2017-2020).
The Award system has been structured to examine and to understand how a peer-review process works, and how judgment and selection of the best architectural design of mosques to be processed. The criteria for the evaluation in the competition process is clarified, and this is to determine how architectural issues are conceived and examined by the professional jury members. The thought processes of the architect-dominated jurors are elucidated; particularly design criteria connected with practitioners' tacit knowledge and experienced eyes. So, to achieve this fairness, "Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture" made all necessary data available and generated before simulation can be implemented, and data must be structured so that discussion of jurors is informative, and then juror’s verdicts will be fairly judged.
The reviewing of projects and the selection of award recipients is the responsibility of the jury specially appointed for each award cycle. Each jury is multidisciplinary, bringing together experienced and internationally known architects, Islamic anthropologist, and artists.
For the third cycle, the jury will hold two meetings before arriving at its final decisions. At the first meeting, the jurors will review the nominated projects (long list) and prepare the short-listed mosques, certainly those shortlisted should be matching the announced criteria and mosque’s location that should be in Islamic country as well as it should be built after the year 2000. Also, the selected mosques should reflect in one way or another some innovative elements related to what we call “future mosque design”.
The shortlisted mosques will be announced and exhibited to the public at a press conference. Information on the projects is also disseminated through a broad campaign organized by the Award general secretariat. The shortlisted mosques will also be featured in the Award’s cyclical monograph and are presented at the award seminar, which is held at the award ceremony in the end of the triennial cycle. the shortlisted mosques will be fully researched by technical reviewers and a full report will be prepared for each mosque before the jury second meeting.
At the second jury meeting, the technical reviewers will prepare presentations on each of the shortlisted project to the jury, and the jurors will examine each of the shortlisted projects in detail, verifying project data and seeking additional information such matching green architecture measures. The jurors are required to comment on a detailed set of criteria in their written analysis and must also respond to specific concerns and questions prepared by the award’s general secretariat. and after evaluating the projects, and finally, jury selects the award recipients and determines the awards for each category.
Since the success of a winning mosques may be the product of efforts by different parties or persons, then the jury could distribute awards among the contributors – architects, other design and construction professionals, craftsmen, clients and institutions – whom it considers having been most important to the success of each mosque, however, the decisions of the jury is final.
Following each award ceremony, the award general secretariat organizes a seminar to present the winning and shortlisted projects to a wider public and to open a platform of discussion for the participants to debate the pressing concerns of the contemporary mosques. Post-ceremony events in the form of lectures and exhibitions are also held in the countries where the winning mosques are located.
A detailed book about the awarded mosques and includes descriptions, architectural drawings and pictures of the winning and shortlisted mosques, it will be published by “Abdulatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture”, and will contain full analysis by jury members on the decision-making process, and specialized criticism, this book will have published and distributed on the occasion of the award final ceremony in 2020.
