Finsa launches its competition for students of Architecture and Design for the second time.
For this year's competition, the interaction between children and the elderly is the new focus.
The International Finsa Award 2018 requires students to design a communal space for both children and the elderly; the space will need to provide facilities that can be found in a day centre for the elderly, along with facilities which can be found in children’s nurseries.
There are numerous advantages that can be attributed to a space of this specification, not least improving relations between the adults and children who use such services. Additionally, such a multipurpose space can encourage further interaction with the neighbouring residents, more specifically, those who look after the children and the elderly using this space. The aim of the competition is for future A&D professionals to explore and redesign the use of wood and other ecological and recyclable materials in construction.
This year’s jury will be formed by six highly influential female architects in the sector: Daisy Froud, Tutor at The London School of Architecture (previously shortlisted for the AJ’s Emerging Woman Architect of the Year award); Amy Martin, Creative Director at Impact Hub Birmingham where she also leads #RadicalChildcare, an initiative to explore, imagine and invest in bold new possibilities for the future of childcare; Cristina Díaz Moreno, architect and visiting professor at SOA Princeton, visiting professor in the GSD Harvard; Susan Le Good, architect at AHMM in London; Immy Kaur, Co-founder of Impact Hub Birmingham and Curator of TEDxBrum; Beatrice de Carli, Lecturer at the School of Architecture in the University of Sheffield; and Rachel Haugh, Founding Partner at SimpsonHaugh and ambassador at Age-Friendly Manchester.
In collaboration with ASF (Architecture sans Fròntieres), the prize for the overall winner will consist of £3000 to put towards an ASF project of the winner’s choice (chosen from all ASF International projects around the world which have an involvement in the competition) and £2000 to cover the expenses of the trip. There will also be a prize for the most innovative concept, which will receive £1000 for travel and accommodation expenses to work alongside the winner in the chosen project destination.
In the first competition, IFA recorded that more than 1000 students from 159 universities around the world took part. The jury included prestigious architects such as Simon Allford, from AHMM; and Xavier Codina, member of Architecture Sans Frontières International amongst others.
The competition entry requirements are as follows: there must be one tutor/lecturer in each team, accompanied by up to five students maximum. There are no regulations regarding the types of materials used, and the use of FINSA products is not mandatory, although one of the conditions of the of the competition is to consider the use of sustainable materials.
