MEDS workshop “Meetings of Design Students” is an international workshop that takes part each summer in a different country, focusing on various issues, themes, topics and settings that will help any designer expand their expertise. It is a chance to get in touch with diverse approaches to design, different building techniques, traditions and skills. MEDS workshop is both practical and educational because it focuses not only on creative theoretical designs, but actually compels participants to execute these designs during the 2-week span of the workshop. You can apply to MEDS as a tutor or as a participant.
A 21st century approach in a historical urban tissue:
Byblos, the city of a thousand faces, holds within its fortifications, not only a great deal of history but also a great deal of diversity in all its aspects.
The urban entity translates the true definition of variety, combining within the same space, different types of people -from more than one social, cultural or economic group- each having ideas and opinions of their own, all in a very embracing atmosphere, celebrating the multidimensional aspects of a community. Therefore this natural social interaction is a manifestation of the concept of DIVERCITY -with a C- which simply joins cities and their raison-d’être.
Particularly found in public spaces, the concept chosen for Meds 2018, in Byblos – Jbeil, will try to help the global and local community find solutions for their common problematic. In fact, everyone is going to merge their know-how to find how to create urban public spaces in this ancient city. They will also lay the criteria of a 21st century approach in a historical urban tissue. With minimal resources, low-cost solutions, lots of experimentation and interdisciplinary approaches, the oriented projects will have a direct impact on the city, through a number of various projects.
Applying as a Tutor At MEDS
Tutors are the backbone of MEDS Workshops, they are at the origins of all visionary creations executed at MEDS. 1 or 2 Tutors can apply with a project inspired from the theme of the workshop. They can select from our list of sites & categories, or propose a free entry. Their project must be realistic, creative, and above all executable in 2 weeks. On the first day of the workshop, tutors recruit 5 to 15 participants, to form a team that will help them develop and execute these projects. In the end, this project will be transported on site to be permanently exhibited.
Applying as a Participant at MEDS
Participants are also a very important part of the MEDS workshop. They come from different design fields, and from different countries. What links them together is their passion for creation and their love for learning. Participants get to select which project they want to help execute and develop. During the 2 weeks workshop, each team along with his tutor has to build the design, document the work, and create an exhibition panel to be displayed in the central forum
