INDESEM 2017 is Open for Entries

INDESEM (International Design Seminar) is a biennale, founded by a group of students in 1962. The seminar was born from a desire to experiment with architecture and urban planning, while exploring beyond the boundaries of the curriculum. For this week the 80 participating students embark on a design project accompanied by lectures and discussions with renowned architects and theorists. InDeSem provides an environment in which students, architects, planners, designers and theorists engage in conversation and discussion about the current and future position of the architect, designer and planner within society.

INDESEM has had the honor of hosting internationally acclaimed architects such as Aldo van Eyck, Rem Koolhaas, Shigeru Ban, Steven Holl, Wiel Arets, Winy Maas, Jean Nouvel, Peter Cook, Renzo Piano, Ben van Berkel, Adriaan Geuze, Daan Roosegaarde and Greg Lynn, as well as theorists such as Saskia Sassen, Bruno Latour, Anthony Vidler, Neil Leach and Michael Speaks. Some even participated in the seminar or organised it themselves.

Previous InDeSem editions explored a vast range of themes and their effect on the architectural practice, such as the impact of emerging digital fabrication technologies (InDeSem 2015 - Re.Craft), the frictions between the different scales (InDeSem 2013 - Scale Matters), and the reduced influence of the built environment as a platform for human interaction (InDeSem 2011 - Losing Ground).

The title for InDeSem 2017 is ‘Crowded’: while the world’s population increases and our cities become crowded, further complications occur such as a decrease in social cohesion. These present challenges and new opportunities for us as designers, architects and urban planners.

The developments affect us in different scales - from the scale of the person to that of the crowd - and affect our environment from the building to the city. This questions our idea of the city and calls for new visions for our urban landscapes and how we manage our crowds.

InDeSem ‘17 would like to offer a platform for this new generation to take up their responsibility and discuss and anticipate the challenges we face. The event should be considered as an opportunity to define a new approach to architecture and its designers, which can contribute to a new way of dealing with this crowded world. How should cities densify and grow on different scale levels? How to intensify new urban developments? How to build the city inwards?

Unfortunately we have a limited capacity. So for the selection of participants we use the format of an entry competition, which is based on the level and creativity of these entry projects. The 80 best entries will be selected and invited for the event.

Good luck! We are looking forward to your entries and hope to see you at INDESEM 2017.
