Call for Entries: 2017 Wheelwright Prize

Harvard University GSD's Wheelwright Prize is a $100,000 travel-based research grant available to early-career architects worldwide. With an open competition process, the Wheelwright Prize recognizes the importance of field research to professional development, and reinforces Harvard GSD’s dedication to fostering investigative approaches to contemporary design.

Applicants must have received a degree from a professionally accredited architecture program in the past 15 years (2002 or later). No affiliation to Harvard is required. Applicants will be asked to submit a portfolio of personal work and a research proposal supported by a travel itinerary. Deadline is January 31, 2017.

The jury will select a winner based on the quality of the applicant’s portfolio, scholarly accomplishments, originality or persuasiveness of the research proposal, evidence of ability to fulfill the proposed project, and the potential for the Wheelwright Prize to impact his or her future development. The 2017 Wheelwright Prize jury will be announced in January.

Past recipients of the prize, which was previously known as the Arthur Wheelwright Traveling Fellowship, include Paul Rudolph, Eliot Noyes, William Wurster, Christopher Tunnard, I. M. Pei, Farès el-Dahdah, Adele Santos, and Linda Pollak. Since relaunching the prize as an open international competition, winners have included Gia Wolff (2013), Jose Ahedo (2014), Erik L'Heureux (2015), and Anna Puigjaner (2016). Previous winners' and finalists' presentations are viewable on the Wheelwright Prize website and applicants are advised to review them.
