We all know that architecture, urban planning, and materials technology should aspire to greater levels of sustainability to deliver a built environment with better economic, ecological, and social performance. Innovation plays an important role since the challenges of the building and construction industry grow daily – especially in terms of sustainability. But how can the best concepts and projects find the spotlight to speed up the pace of transformation?
Through the LafargeHolcim Awards competition, the LafargeHolcim Foundation is helping the world to build better – by creating an international platform for exchanging inspiring ideas and rewarding the best submissions from professionals and students from around the globe. The competition features a category for established professionals with projects at an advanced stage of design and also a category for emerging concepts of the next generation.
“Students and young professionals around the world now have an unlimited opportunity to share their ideas and win international recognition through the LafargeHolcim Awards,” says PhD candidate and LafargeHolcim Forum 2016 student poster winner, Eduardo Pizarro. The enthusiastic Brazilian architecture student is conducting research on “Turning Voids into Infrastructure” to find ways to leverage spaces between the buildings in Paraisópolis, the second largest favela in the city where he studies at the Faculty of Architecture & Urbanism at the University of São Paulo (USP).
The previous winner of the Global Gold prize in the Awards shows the importance of ensuring an enduring positive impact on communities. The project is not only a contemporary icon of sustainable design and urban architecture but is leading a process of cultural transformation for the people living in the informal settlements of Medellín, Colombia. UVA de La Imaginación focuses on creating public spaces at a reservoir where two giant water tanks have been replaced by new public infrastructure.
The LafargeHolcim Awards is one of the most significant global competitions in sustainable design. Entry into the competition is free and must be made in English using a web-based form to provide information on authorship, a project summary, technical details, as well as project images or illustrations. Entries must be submitted by March 21, 2017.
In its efforts to encourage inventive new solutions, the LafargeHolcim Foundation places special focus on the next generation. Students from leading technical universities are part of the LafargeHolcim
Forum, an international symposium that advances concepts of sustainable construction. In addition, the LafargeHolcim Awards place a special focus on 18-30 year old students and young professionals because fresh ideas will shape tomorrow’s world.
