Call for Submissions: Gateways to Australia's Gold Coast

Australia’s Gold Coast is searching for an artist to deliver iconic gateways that are visually bold, expressive and memorable. The major public artworks will “bookend” the city with installation expected before the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, your artwork will be on the world’s stage as visitors and athletes arrive at Games time.

The design competition is open worldwide. The two gateways to the city are located in high traffic zones. At the northern boundary of the city on the M1 Pacific Motorway, the available site area is 750 metres long, 2 metres wide at the base with a maximum height and top width of 11 metres. The southern site is earmarked for a zone near Gold Coast Highway and an international airport.

The artworks will be highly visible and seen by:

  • 155,000 daily commuters 
  • 12 million annual visitors
  • 550,000 residents

An independent panel will select up to five finalists and invite them to further develop the designs. The panel, a cross section of industry and stakeholder representatives, will select the winning entry. Final installation is expected in November 2017.

Applications close 23 December 2016. The Gateway Public Art Commission is co-funded by the Queensland Government and City of Gold Coast.
