Asia’s leading annual event on design, innovation and brands, Business of Design Week 2016, will commence on 30 November 2016 and end on 3 December 2016 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This year, the Business of Design Week brings to Hong Kong the distinctive minds in the profession of architecture to share their views on development of a future city. This is the first year BODW is partnering with a U.S. city – Chicago.
Renovating the Public Space
Carol Ross Barney, the founder of Ross Barney Architects, will be one of the guest speakers for Plenary I of Business of Design Week. She will share her design concepts which integrate user experience, environmental protection and the public space. The Chicago Riverwalk, the project she has worked on for 15 years, is regarded as a masterpiece blending urban planning and public space renovation. The aged buildings with features of neoclassical architectural style juxtapose with the modern skyscrapers in the city. Together the new and the old demonstrate the impressive transformation of the cityscape in decades.
In the same plenary we are also honored to have Carlo Ratti, the director of the MIT Senseable City Lab and the founder of Carlorattiassociati, as a guest speaker. He will focus on the realization of his idea in the Senseable City that emphasizes on interpersonal communications. Winy Mass, the Dutch architect who founded the MVRDV, will present his work on urban planning such as his creation of Skygarden in Seoul for Plenary II.
Relating Architectural Design and Culture
For Plenary III Culture & The City I, the Chicago-based architect Brian Lee is invited to discuss his experience in designing and constructing the tallest building in Beijing, the award-winning China World Trade Center. Minsuk Cho, the founder of Mass Studio, and Jennifer Dunlop Fletcher, the Helen Hilton Raiser Curator of Architecture and Design of the SFMOMA, will be featured in Culture & The City II, in which they will illustrate the relationship among architecture, design, culture and the city. Another guest speaker of the same plenary is Zoë Ryan, the Chair and Curator of Architecture and Design at the Art Institute of Chicago. She has had a number of contributions to the industry, such as planning the event “Making Place: The Architecture of David Adjaye” in 2015, as well as writing and editing for numerous publications, including ‘Building with Water: Designs, Concepts, Visions’. In 2012, Fast Company magazine named Zoë one of the 50 people shaping the future of design.
Fusing History and Culture into Design
The new entry to this year’s program, the Workplace & Design forum will be attended by the founder of Urbantainer Youngjin Jeong. She will share her inspirations and design process of Urbantainer, the concept of converting containers into workplaces and pop-up shops.
Invited for addressing the Food & Design forum, Tina Norden Riba is an architect and interior designer specializing in hotel, restaurant, and high-end residential design. Since she moved to Asia 18 years ago, she has enjoyed successes at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Groups, Hotel ICON, PMQ, Roppongi Hills, and Futako Tamagawa. Her designs incorporate historical and cultural backgrounds to express the identities of the locations and render stunning sceneries within a pleasant atmosphere.
In addition to the 4-day Business of Design Week Forum, Detour will also be organized to bring interactive experience to the public. Diversify functions such as DFA Award Presentation organized by Hong Kong Design Centre will also be held to recognize the achievements of the talents. These functions encourage intellectual exchange of ideas and creativity and expansion of network for design elites all over the world and thus demonstrate the vibrant creative industry of Hong Kong.
