The Architecture Foundation is inviting applications to join a masterclass, which will be staged in the James Stirling-designed Florey Building at The Queen’s College, Oxford.
Six studios will consider the typology of the university, through the development of a speculative design over the course of four days (Thursday September 8th-Sunday September 11th). The studio leaders will present lectures over the course of the masterclass while the Drawing Matter Foundation will stage an exhibition drawn from its holdings of 1960’s architectural drawings. On the evening of September 12th, the studios will present their projects at a public event at London’s Barbican Arts Centre.
We welcome applicants at all stages of their career but they must be individual Architecture Foundation members, employees at Architecture Foundation member practices or Architecture Foundation student members.
To apply, please submit an illustrated four-page A4 curriculum vitae in pdf format. The deadline for submissions has been extended to Monday 16th May at 10.00 pm. Successful candidates will be informed by Friday 20th May and will be required to pay the full fee by Wednesday 1st June.
Studio Leaders
Studio 1: Kersten Geers
Born in Ghent in 1975, Kersten Geers graduated in Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Ghent, Belgium and at the Esquela Tecnica Superior de Arquitectura in Madrid, Spain. He worked with Maxwan Architects and Urbanists and with Neutelings Riedijk Architects in Rotterdam before founding OFFICE Kersten Geers David van Severen in 2005. He was professor at the University of Ghent, and visiting professor at Columbia University, NYC, and the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio (CH), and is currently teaching at the EPFL, Lausanne (CH). He is a founding member of the architecture magazine San Rocco.
Studio 2: Stephanie MacDonald and Tom Emerson
Tom Emerson and Stephanie MacDonald founded the London-based practice 6a in 2001, after meeting at the Royal College of Art. Tom. He has taught at the Architectural Association and the University of Cambridge and published articles on architecture, literature and art. In 2010 he was appointed Professor of Architecture at the eth Department of Architecture in Zurich. Stephanie has developed the practice’s collaborative approach working with artists, fashion designers and scientists and leads the material research of the studio. Recently completed projects include a house and studio for Juergen Teller in London.
Studio 3: Emanuel Christ
Born in 1970, Emanuel Christ graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich in 1998. In the same year he and Christoph Gantenbein founded their firm Christ & Gantenbein in Basel. The office’s activity ranges from small transformations, to housing, office buildings, bridges, and urban master plans. One of their main focal points is museum architecture. They have recently completed the extension to Basel’s Kunstmuseum, and the renovation and extension of the Swiss National Museum in Zurich. Since 2010 Christ and Gantenbein have been teaching together as professors at the ETH Zurich.
Studio 4: Andrew Clancy and Colm Moore
Andrew Clancy and Colm Moore studied at University College Dublin, Andrew graduating in 2001 and Colm in 2002. Founded in 2007, their Dublin-based practice is engaged in the design of both architecture and products. The practice’s Slievebawnogue Houses won the 2012 AAI Downes Medal for Excellence in Architecture. Andrew is Senior Teaching Fellows to the Masters of Architecture at Queen’s University Belfast. Current projects include a new house in Somerset.
Studio 5: Go Hasegawa
Born in the Saitama prefecture of Japan in 1977, Go Hasegawa went on to study at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He completed his masters in architecture in 2002, and worked at Taira Nishizawa Architects until 2004. In 2005 he established Go Hasegawa & Associates. He is visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles and at the Polytechnic of Milan, Italy. Recent projects include the House in Sangenjaya and the House in Yokohama (both 2015).
Studio 6: Oliver Lütjens and Thomas Padmanabhan
Oliver Lütjens and Thomas Padmanabhan founded their practice in Zurich in 2007, having both previously worked for Diener & Diener in Basel. They were Visiting Professors at TU Munich last year and will be Visitin Professors at EPFL from September. Both have written for San Rocco and in 2012 were part of the San Rocco group exhibition at the Venice Biennale. Recent projects include an apartment building on Herdenstrasse in Zurich (2016).
