The WOOD WORKS Exhibition in Moscow. Modern furniture. Handmade.

The first in a series of exhibitions devoted to modern, local Russian wood craftsmanship — WOOD WORKS — will bring together workshops, designers and artisans at the Moscow design cluster ARTPLAY on April 1-3, 2016. The central themes of WOOD WORKS are wood, functionality, design, sustainability, uniqueness and local production. The fair will also feature cultural, educational and musical programs, as well as a craft market and a cafe.

Stylish homeowners no longer want to buy mass-produced furniture — they prefer to own unique pieces. WOOD WORKS provides an exclusive chance to see, touch and evaluate the work of dozens of local artisans. Carpenter workshops, many of them founded only a few years ago, will present their furniture and home furnishings made of wood. Most of the pieces presented at WOOD WORKS are one-of-a-kind or part of a limited series. These workshops do not chase after the big furniture brands — they succeed by creating their own unique brands.

WOOD WORKS is the brainchild of Oleg Dyachenko, who has led a successful career in publishing, art direction (Esquire, Interni, Intersection) and other creative pursuits.

The participants will include both perfectionists who work only with the most expensive materials and romantics who make tables out of old fences; members of huge workshops with high-tech equipment and artisans who create objects entirely by hand. The main criteria for selecting participants was that they use wood as a multipurpose, ecological and renewable material. WOOD WORKS shows the progress of local wood craftsmanship and creates a platform for exchanging ideas and generating new ones.
