Fifty-two years after its completion, the Marina City Complex in Chicago has been named an official architectural landmark. Following a 48-0 vote by the City Council, the buildings by Bertrand Goldberg will be given their official designation on March 16, reports The Architect Magazine.
Despite support from the public, a succession of disinterested mayors prevented the Marina City Complex’s designation for decades. However, after the dismissal of Goldberg’s Prentice Women’s Hospital for landmark designation -- and its subsequent demolition -- there was a push by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and local Alderman, Brendan Reilly toward the preservation of the Marina City buildings.
Following a series of inside deals, a final public hearing announced the landmark designation of the Marina City Complex in a record 41 minutes, according to The Architect Magazine.
