The Pauhu pavilion was constructed as part of Tampere, Finland's 2015 Tampere Architecture Week, an annual event that aims to explore ideas about architecture and urban design by bringing together design students and professionals from the city. The 2015 theme -- interaction -- brought forth a discussion between architects and other citizens of Tampere.
The pavilion functions as an open-stage for performances and public debates, and also aims to promote forward-thinking ideas about the innovative use of wood in architecture. The name “Pauhu” refers to the “distant roar generated by the Tampere rapids, by the city around the pavilion, as well as by the artists and presenters the pavilion is hosting.”
The exterior of the pavilion is clad with a newly created wood texture called Grafwood. This wood has both an unusual feel and reflects the daylight and weather conditions. The smooth form of the interior of the pavilion is inspired by the waves of both the rapids and sculptures by Finnish sculptor, Tapio Wirkkala. The interior looks like it was carved from a single block of wood due to its highly contrasting color tones. Its design focuses on a series of plywood strips that are attached along the width of the pavilion.
The construction of the pavilion combined both traditional construction methods with innovative digital fabrication processes. It was designed using an algorithm-based method which later was transformed into a parametric 3D-model. The pavilion was built in eight days by a team of architecture students at an off site location. Although temporary, the Pauhu pavilion will remain in the city through 2016 as part of an effort to reactivate a main street in Tampere.
