World Architecture Festival has today announced the exciting seminar programme for this year’s event. Featuring some of the world’s premier architecture practices including BIG, SOM and Manuelle Gautrand, the talks programme will run alongside the annual WAF Awards and exhibition displays at the world famous Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from 4 – 6 November.
Expert speakers will explore topics charting the past, present and future of world architecture and will have the central theme of 50:50, a celebration of 50 years of Singapore independence. Speakers will share industry-transforming insight on subjects such as tall buildings, the cities of the future and women in architecture.
Kai-Uwe Bergman, Principal at Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), will discuss building in extreme environments from complicated climates to solutions that merge architecture and nature. Director of the Architectural Association School of Architecture, Brett Steele will be chairing a series of talks on technology in architecture, from 3D printing to the future of making on the 5th and 6th of November.
Christine Murray, Editor-in-chief of Architectural Review, will be bringing the Women in Architecture campaign to Singapore for this year’s festival. The campaign that supports women in the industry has been hugely successful in the UK and Christine will be hosting a panel discussion to explore the subject from an international standpoint at the world’s biggest architectural festival.
The first day of the festival will draw to a close with a keynote speech Charles Jencks. The sculptor, landscape architect, author and critic will explore how our thought process has changed and whether what we now think about the future has changed from our past perceptions.
Premier architect Manuelle Gautrand will open the second day of the festival with a talk examining the future of Paris. From public space to combining heritage and innovation, the talk will look at what the future has in-store for one of the world’s major cities. Scott Duncan of SOM will partner with Charles Jencks on an exploration of the future of tall buildings, looking at new technology and the structural engineering behind these marvels of modern construction.
Architecture is only one part of what makes up our metropolis and Michael Sorkin of Michael Sorkin Studio will be using food to examine the fabric of our cities. Sorkin will present the findings of his concept into creating a sustainable food resource for New York and how food production can be brought into the heart of the city.
The seminar programme will form a key strand of the festival and will run alongside live crit session from the nominees of the WAF awards. Nominees will present their projects live to an international jury and festivalgoers in the hope of being named World Building of the Year 2015. Shortlisted entrants include Foster & Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, Herzog & de Meuron, OMA/Ole Scheeren, Rogers Stirk Harbour, Rafael Vinoly Architects, BIG, Grimshaw, Heatherwick Studio, Carlos Ott and this year’s Stirling Prize winners, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.
