The International Architectural Education Summit (IAES) will take place during September 9-11, 2015. The 4th IAES summit will take place at The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) Centre in Singapore. The registration for this upcoming event is now open.
Established in 2009 by UCLA Architecture and Urban Design,Los Angeles, and in 2011 joined by IE School of Architecture and Design, Madrid, the Summit is a biennial conference dedicated to foster a constructive dialogue between leading academics, practitioners, policy makers and industry representatives with ideas to make architectural education more relevant against a backdrop of globalization, changing technology and pressing societal issues. The inaugural Summit was held in Tokyo in 2009 and the second and third editions took place in 2011 and 2013 in Madrid and Berlin. The fourth iteration is collaboratively conceptualized with the Urban Redevelopment Authority Singapore, the National University of Singapore and Singapore University of Technology and Design. It will explore the topic of “Emerging Networks in Architectural Education” from many diverse perspectives, and we are confident will form a bridge between East and West.
Given the complexity of globalization, it is inevitable that collaborative efforts among architectural schools around the world will be necessary to properly address the many emerging issues. Similarly, the development of networks (exchanging information, forming alliances, exploring common interests) is not exclusive to schools of architecture. Today we see networks forming across disciplines, between industry and academia and even with other types of organization and institutions.
Within architectural education, there are numerous examples and models of successful collaborations over the past decades, ranging from student and teacher exchanges to joint programs and major collaborative projects, and everything in between. Addressing architectural education within a global network context provides many advantages to the schools and individuals that engage in this process. These benefits include shared financial and intellectual resources; an exchange of information, experiences, ideas, and people; as well as exposure to different cultures and their approach to education as it is informed by a different historical framework and perspective on contemporary issues. Without a doubt this trend towards collaboration will most certainly increase as we move towards the future. The Summit will intensely debate these issues over two and half days in Singapore.
At the past three events in 2009,2011 and 2013 there have been brilliant moments of convergences between esteemed educators such as Sarah Whiting, Michael Speaks, Beatriz Colomina, Brett Steele, Winka Dubbledam, Peter Cook, Wang Shu, Monica Ponce de Leon, Kristin Feireiss, Winy Maas, and many others .
