SPF: architectsis proud to sponsor an exclusive Southern California exhibition of Lucas Blok’s large format paintings in the SPF:a Gallery. Like many artists featured in the gallery, Blok’s work intuitively explores the spatial relationship common to both art and architecture. His paintings emanate and pulse with a lyrical complexity that usher the viewer into a world of color relationships that play on both optical mechanics and the emotions alike.
“I am fascinated by our ability to take electrical-mechanical energy and convert it into a visual experience of form and color by which we define our reality. My paintings present compositional and color elements that open the viewer to seeing this process along with providing an aesthetic, informative, and emotional experience.”
One first sees Blok’s vivid color fields arranged in geometric tautness. Then the subtleties in color, form and composition begin their work. The pristine surfaces begin to vibrate. Dominant shapes appear to dematerialize. Color chords register their optical strength, while phantom colors slowly migrate or surge across the picture plane. Thus, Blok’s spare surface world of simple shape and harmonious color reverberates with an inner life that, with contemplation, possesses a rich visual involvement of emotion, intellect and spirit.
Born in Gouda, the Netherlands, Blok was raised in Holland, Canada and the United States. Since 1989 he has maintained a studio in Monterey, CA and a residence in Carmel with his wife, classical pianist Barbara Ruzicka.
This is Blok’s fourth exhibition at the SPF:a Gallery [formerly MODAA]. The exhibition will open with a reception on Thursday, October 15 from 6-10PM, and Blok’s paintings will be on display in the gallery until January 15, 2016. SPF:a Gallery is open for viewing to the public from Tuesdays through Saturdays, 12:00 – 6:00 PM or during off hours by appointment.
