Fernando Romero EnterprisE (FR-EE) has revealed their proposal for the “Museo Mazatlán” in Mexico, which will be dedicated to the local culture of Mazatlán. Inspired by Mazatlán’s nickname, “The Pearl of the Pacific”, the design resembles an oyster with a pearl at its centre. This “pearl” is a geodesic dome, bringing together views of the sky with views of the city and sea.
The museum's steel structure will be clad with weather-resistant material, with part of the façade incorporating photovoltaic panels and filtering light into the museum through small openings. As a precaution against floods, the entire structure is also set on an elevated base.
Upon entry, visitors will be greeted with the main exhibition areas and an IMAX theater with a 350-person seating capacity on the lower level. Moving one floor up, the first floor will contain a restaurant, a temporary multi-use room and access to the terrace. The upper floor will contain a documentation center and classrooms for workshops and employee training.
The museum will be curated by Marinela Servitje, director of Sietecolores, an organization which specializes in interactive cultural infrastructure.
Construction of the Museo Mazatlán is set to begin in 2016.
