Join the CTBUH New York City Chapter for a discussion on the VIA 57 West building. Guest speakers Bjarke Ingels (BIG), Aine Brazil (Thornton Tomasetti), and Jeff Crompton (Hunter Roberts) will discuss the architecture, engineering and the construction process behind this unique structure. VIA stands tall at 467 feet and is one of the most architecturally distinctive buildings constructed in New York City. The building provides a dramatic visual gateway to Manhattan’s skyline along the Hudson River. VIA is a hybrid between the European perimeter block and a traditional Manhattan high-rise development. The building’s unique shape combines the advantages of both: the compactness and efficiency of a courtyard building providing density, a sense of intimacy, and expansive views. The form of the building shifts depending on the viewer’s vantage point. While appearing like a pyramid from the West Side Highway, it turns into a dramatic glass spire when seen from West 58th Street.

Bjarke Ingels
Bjarke Ingels is one of the world’s most exciting architects, he started BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) in 2005 after co-founding PLOT Architects in 2001 and working at OMA in Rotterdam. His approach to design is to begin with the question, ‘What is the biggest problem – what is the greatest potential?’ He finds the answer through careful analysis of everything from local cultures and climates and ever-changing patterns of contemporary everyday life, to the ebbs and flows of the global economy. The result is an information-driven architecture, innovative in both programme and technology, which stands as the material counterpart to the rapidly evolving realities of the twenty-first-century digital economy and digital communication networks.
Aine Brazil
Throughout her career, Aine Brazil has been responsible for the design and construction of nearly every building type, including high-rise offices, residential buildings, hotels, air-rights projects with long-span transfer systems, hospitals and parking garages. Highly respected in the profession, Aine has garnered dozens of professional awards for her leadership and her numerous influential projects. In 2006, she was honored as Woman of the Year by WX, New York Women Executives in Real Estate, and Crain’s New York Business has named her one of “New York’s 100 Most Influential Women in Business.” In addition, she was a member of the Mayor’s Commission on adopting the International Building Code (IBC) as the basis for the 2008 model building code for the City of New York.
Jeff Crompton
Jeff Crompton is a Vice President and Project Executive at Hunter Roberts Construction Group. He is a trained Engineer with over 23 years of senior management experience. He provides preconstruction, construction, and post-construction support. Mr. Crompton is well known for his expertise with both new construction and renovation projects.
