Erick van Egeraat’s 330,000 m2 proposal for the Dynamo Stadium in Moscow recently placed ahead of four international competitors. Situated on a 116,000-m2 plot in Petrovsky Park, the competition site has been chosen by the Administration of the Stadium and VTB Bank to be developed in order to meet contemporary international requirements to support Russia’s bid to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Erick van Egeraat’s proposed “multifunctional urban regenerator” will feature a 45,000-seat Stadium Arena, a 10,000-seat Arena Hall, a Retail and Entertainment complex, restaurants, parking and other facilities. With these various programmatic activities, the proposed design aims to provide a self sustaining model that will be activated continually throughout the day.

The new proposal is built within the ring of the old stadium at the Park – an interesting move that preserves the essence of the historical structure and its perimeter façade, while upgrading the facility to meet contemporary functional requirements. Aesthetically, the newer style literally grows out of the older expression as the bubble seems to float above the older outer wall. The jury especially praised the design for its compact nature, as the facilities are all concentrated in the current stadium’s perimeter, providing easy access between the activities for both competitors and spectators.
Erick van Egeraat explained, “…We proposed a design that embraces the history and context of the Dynamo stadium and the Petrovski Park and creates a contemporary icon of the 21st century of which the people of Moscow can be proud. A project that will provide diversity to the area and reinforce its identity.”
To develop the competition proposal, Erick van Egeraat and his Russian partner Mikhail Posokhin (Mosproekt-2) selected a team of Russian and internationally acclaimed consultants including Bollinger + Grohmann structural engineers, Amsterdam ArenA Advisory, Artec Acoustic consultants and Illuminator lighting consultants.
