Infamously known for their work with shipping containers (be sure to check out their Puma City previously featured on AD), American-firm LOT -EK has nearly completed the APAP Open School, in Korea. The containers are perched atop each other creating spaces beneath them for a public amphitheater, within them for educational functions and even on top of them for a long decked roof offering great views.

The amphitheater uses the existing sloping topography to create a contained public space. Connected with a staircase, the second level is lifted 3 meters above ground. Assembled from 8 containers, this level houses the “operations” of the school; a large multi-purpose space that functions as a meeting assembly room, an exhibition space and a work area for the open school researchers, as well as two studios for the artists all occupy this level.
The containers are capped with glass windows on their short sides, allowing north east to south west views.
Along the north west axis, the containers are pierced with a series of peep holes. The staggered heights of the holes are intended for both young children and adults to be able to experience the different framed views of the landscape.
