Currently on display at the Chamber in New York, Sung Jang’s “Mobi” is the investigation of transforming a modular, buttress-like element into “the human perception of beauty.” Mobi is part of Chamber’s latest exhibit, “This is Not a Duet,” curated by Maria Cristina Didero and Juan Garcia Mosqueda, and which showcases the oppositional work of two artists. Sung's Mobi is complimented by Gala Fernandez Montero's “Caro Ettore.”
Curated by Juan Garcia Mosqueda, Mobi explores two conflicting images of beauty – efficiency and expense. The individual units of Mobi come together to embody both ends of beauty, forming lightweight, sweeping forms that move between anthropomorphic and architectural. Thousands of the units were used to construct a pavilion, a bench, a low table and a lighting fixture. The visitor is invited to investigate the authentic and visionary forms that appear before them, as Mobi’s structural units celebrate the capability of a single unit to produce countless variations.
“Caro Ettore” by Gala Fernandez Montero, and curated by Maria Cristina Didero, is an example of the artist’s proficiency with natural materials, comprising two series of hand-crafted objects. “16 Little Sculptures” is a set of small-scale, limited edition objects made up of different materials, while “Adult Games” is composed of 32 objects of different shapes and sizes, meant to be interpreted by the user to create unique sculptures, all presented in a meticulous box.
