Italian architects Studio Fuksas have been selected, along with Canberra-based Guida Moseley Brown Architects, to design the Australia Forum, a new national convention centre in Canberra, Australia. Located at one apex of Central Canberra's Parliamentary Triangle, Studio Fuksas describe their design as a "completely transparent and permeable" volume which is "in constant dialogue with the urban context and the environment," integrating into the surrounding hills and the nearby Lake Burley Griffin by reflecting their presence in its skin.
The Australia Forum is a key infrastructure project of the ACT government intended to attract everything from trade conventions to political summits, with a report commissioned by the Canberra Business Chamber and Canberra Convention Bureau highlighting the potential of the centre to bring economic benefits in the form of increased tourism.
The design features a 3,000 seat plenary hall, an 8,000 square metre exhibition area, a ballroom capable of hosting 1,500 guests, meeting areas, offices and retail, as well as a "Centre for Dialogue" which will be located in a separate volume. The project is scheduled for completion in 2020.
