The Museum of Estonian Architecture opens its new season with an exhibition of the latest recipients of the Alvar Aalto Medal, Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos. Exhibition “The Window and the Mirror” opens at the museum today (Friday, February 13), providing visitors a first-hand experience of the works of the internationally acclaimed architects Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano. In 2014 Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos won the architecture competition of the Arvo Pärt Centre to be built in Estonia by 2018.
“The idea to introduce Nieto Sobejano’s work in Estonia arose when Fuensanta Nieto arrived in Estonia last June to claim the Grand Prize of the Arvo Pärt Centre’s architecture competition,” said Triin Ojari, director of the architecture museum. “Their practice is a world-acclaimed Spanish architecture office, which just recently won the prestigious Alvar Aalto Medal. The Aalto Medal is awarded for approaches to architecture that are creative and work on a human scale. Majority of Nieto Sobejano’s work focuses on museums and other cultural venues, and is characterized by a subtle sense of material and detail and a skilful use of natural light – exactly the qualities that brought them success at the Arvo Pärt Centre’s competition.”
Exhibition “The Window and the Mirror”provides an overview of Nieto Sobejano’s most important works and explores the unseen side of the creative process, which is often complicated and time-consuming. Among other projects exhibited, the visitors can familiarize themselves with the Contemporary Art Centre Córdoba, the San Telmo Museum, the Madinat al-Zahra Museum and the Zaragoza Conference Centre. All of the projects on display are presented with drawings, video and various printed materials., Exhibition design emphasizes sensory, experiential qualities in order to provide balance for the analytical side of the presented projects.
The Museum of Estonian Architecture is a museum established in 1991 specializing in collections, research and promotion of Estonian architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as facilitating and displaying international exhibitions.
