From the architects: New Taipei City Museum of Art is located in an area between Yingge and Sanshia in New Taipei City. The site faces Guishan and Yingge to the north, and Da Han River and Xue Mountains range to the south. The winning architecture design scheme presented by KRIS YAO | ARTECH will create “a Contemporary Museum of Art among the Reeds,” in this site both meaningful and grand in historical, cultural and geographical features. The building will fuse the local landscape and cultural imagery with an architectural vision to form a new sustainable architectural work.
New Taipei City Museum of Art looks to transcend the current museum typology by being a more publicly accessible museum. At the base level of the building, the art streets and outdoor sculpture garden take a form imitating the cracks of the near-by Da Han River riverbed. By following the slope of the base, visitors can enjoy the sculptures in the sculpture park or linger around the art street. The main building mass is elevated over the site by a large-span structural system to provide the most flexible exhibition space and present the visitors with magnificent views of the surrounding river and mountains.
The characteristic exterior look of New Taipei Museum of Art is composed of vertical structural tubes of different heights. This vertically linear elevation concept is derived from the blurry beauty of reeds calmly swaying in the wind, and is an expression of the visual illusions, which are unpredictable and ever-changing. Through the design of the new museum of art, the architect, Kris Yao, wishes to create a “place” that would be embraced by the people, and create future memories that can be shared by the citizens of New Taipei City.
