Curated by the Charles Correa Foundation, the Z Axis is an annual conference bringing together pioneers, thought leaders, influencers, professionals, and students in the fields of architecture and urban design to create an intellectual community focused on issues related to the context of India and the developing world. Fifteen speakers will gather from across the globe to explore the theme of Great City…Terrible Place, including Charles Correa, David Adjaye, Alfredo Brillembourg of Urban Think Tank, Spain's "guerrilla architect" Santiago Cirugeda, Simone Sfriso of Studio TAM Associati and more.
"To [most people], the most important quality a city can have is not actually visual at all. It is: SYNERGY! - a multiplier that transforms society into much more than the sum of its parts," says Charles Correa. Citing the seductive myth of the Mediterranean "City Beautiful" ideal, Correa proposes instead that the overwhelming influx of rural migrants into urban centers of the developing world demonstrates that "people have to choose... and that’s when they almost always opt for a great City – even though it might simultaneously be a terrible place." The conference seeks to explore in depth the broader questions of what truly makes a city great, and how to design solutions to meet the complex challenges facing cities of the developing world.
The program invites professionals and meritorious students to participate and attend the conference, which will be held in the Kala Academy in Panaji, Goa. Taking place between March 20-22, the conference concludes with the Climactic Session, a conversation between the iconic Charles Correa, Balkrishna Doshi, Mahendra Raj, and Raj Rewal. Three architects and an engineer who "scripted the architecture of an independent India," these individuals will discuss the their thoughts and hopes for the opportunities and creative potential of the country today.
