Global design and consulting firm Woods Bagot has revealed its plans to collaborate with Plenary Conventions New Zealand, a consortium responsible for the development of the new Christchurch Convention Centre. The consortium also includes international infrastructure firm Plenary Group, local firms Ngai Tahu Property and Carter Group, Warren and Mahoney Architects, and environmental design consultancy Boffa Miskell. The project is a symbol of the city’s ongoing restoration following the destructive earthquake of 2011. The scheme functions as project that will anchor the “Christchurch Blueprint,” a plan for multiple public facilities that aim to improve the daily lives of Christchurch citizens and visitors alike. Woods Bagot hopes that the locally inspired civic building will serve as a catalyst for the city’s earthquake recovery plan. The next step of the project is a master planning and development phase leading up to scheduled work on the site beginning in 2015, with the centre expected to open to the public in 2017.
