What influence do art and space have on the contemporary architectural design process? MoMA's most recent exhibition on architecture and design Conceptions of Space strives to answer this question. Themed under the umbrella of spatial relations, Curator Pedro Gadanho ruminates on the subject in a broad and philosophical sense. The exhibition delves into the topic using an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating research from French philosopher Michel Foucault on the subject of the expanded field. Conceptions of Space tackles spatial analysis through twenty international examples by leading architecture firms. Prominent international architects are juxtaposed with rising firms, each displaying a project tasked primarily with harnessing space effectively. Architects exhibited include Herzog and de Meuron, Alvaro Siza, and Kengo Kuma, along with emerging architects Pezo von Ellrichshausen, Ryue Nishizawa, Ensamble Studio, SO-IL and MOS Architects.
Through a careful selection of displayed works, Gadanho offers a brief history of the evolution of various types of space in an architectural context. Each project addresses a different type of space, such as performative, envelope, and assemblage among others. The projects selected vary in scale, material, and function, providing the largest possible cross section of worldwide spatial design.
