The Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in partnership with the Fundació Mies van der Rohe have launched an exciting program of discussions and workshops titled: «Rethinking Europe - European experience in the city development»
The series, which, as part of the Strelka Institute's summer program, will run from the June 30 to July 29, invites representatives from the architectural and urban planning communities of Europe's four largest cities - Amsterdam, Berlin, Barcelona, and London - to discuss how their city's approaches to urban development could be applied to urban territories in Moscow. From the Press Release. City dwellers spend most of their time between home and office, and approaches to urban planning of recent decades reflect this feature of the modern city life. Not surprisingly, nearly 40% of architectural projects nominated for the last 20 years for the most prestigious European award in the field of architectural innovation - Mies van der Rohe Award - are presented in the categories of "dwelling" and "offices". However the application of innovative approaches to urban design has not become a trend yet. The inhabitants of megacities use high-speed connection and the latest technologies, but still live in houses built on the technology of the previous century and work in offices that do not meet the requirements of the new information and technological era. Many cities also unfairly forget about proper public spaces development that unites citizens on their way from home to the office and back.
Series "Rethinking Europe - European experience in the city development" will tell about the successful experience in the urban development and design of major European cities, and will use the most successful European examples of working with the territories to develop spaces of Moscow.
The program will include a series of four individual events - panel discussions, and workshops for students on the development of real territory in Moscow with representatives of the architectural and urban municipality communities of the four largest European cities - Amsterdam, Berlin, London and Barcelona. During the workshops, representatives of the architectural and urban community of the cities will explore specific case in Moscow – the area situated in Moscow city center, directly opposite Zaryadie area, between Raushskaya and Sadovnicheskaya embankments.
The purpose of the series is to show innovative European approaches to the development of urban areas and to investigate the applicability of these approaches to work with the development of territories in Moscow.
