Make Architects have been selected from a shortlist of five practices to renovate the area around Sydney's Wynyard Station, beating SOM, Grimshaw, Bates Smart and Ingenhoven to the $1 billion project.
The scheme, called One Carrington Street, involves the renovation of the historic Shell House, creation of a new 27-story, 58,000 square metre office tower, a new eastern transit hall for Wynyard Station including 5,000 square metres of retail space, and a new grand entrance to Wynyard Station from George and Carrington Streets.
More on the scheme after the break
Make Architects will be working in collaboration with Sydney-based practice Architectus, who won an award in 2012 for their urban design framework produced for the Wynyard district.
The project's developers Brookfield say that One Carrington Street "will transform the Wynyard precinct into a first class destination and hub for office workers, commuters, shoppers and the community at large - right in the centre of the Sydney Central Business District."
In addition to the new commercial space provided by the scheme, the project includes important upgrades to Wynyard station. Wynyard Park will also be integrated into the overall development to create an active and engaging public space.
Make’s Project Director for One Carrington Street, Ian Lomas, said “The design for One Carrington Street is all about Sydney. The route between Wynyard Station, George Street and the Hunter Connection will give the city a new urban space, with the generosity associated with all great stations around the world. The new office will be sculpted to optimise views to and from the building – each elevation is different to complement and enhance the city’s skyline.”
