Responding to the demand for healthcare services in rural Southeast Asia, Building Trust International launched an international competition - Moved to Care - to envision flexible and relocatable healthcare facilities. Over 200 entrants participated; one professional winner, a multi-disciplinary team from the USA, and one student winner were honored. Check out their winning proposals, after the break...
Professional Winner: MOVED2CARE / Patrick Morgan (M-Arch), Simon Morgan (MPH), Jhanéa Williams (M-Arch)
In a region with an average of less than 1 physician per 4,000 individuals, the need for quality and broad ranging care is immense. By integrating clinical space into community space, the barrier to access can be removed and healthcare can be delivered safely, effectively, and can generate dramatic improvements on health outcomes for the rural South East Asian population. The prefabricated core opens up to reveal circulation space and bold colours which are used to differentiate areas. Local building skills are then encouraged to create shading and rain protection elements for waiting areas.
The jury lauded the design for its “ease of deployment, creative use of color and clear layout of flexible spaces.”
Student Winner: RE-FLEX / Christopher Knitt (Wisconsin University)
The REFLEX medical unit is an impressionable architecture which reacts to location, culture, and the people it serves. Utilizing retired containers as a platform for a mobile medical clinic translates to simple and economic relocation. The 250 sq. foot REFLEX unit provides a sanitary and climate controlled procedure area within the insulated walls of the container. A telescoping steel ribcage encloses an extremely flexible space that is built to suit at each location, given local materials, tradesmen, and desired use. Possible configurations might include a classroom, or subdivision for auxiliary exam rooms.
Building Trust international is looking for support from relevant NGOs, global healthcare professionals and private companies to support the realization of the winning Professional entry.
