Currently on view until August 30, Unit Architects is presenting their 8-week exhibition in the entrance space of Buro Happold's 17 Newman Street offices as part of Buro Happold’s Emerging Architects event program. A great way to show off some of the upcoming talent in architecture and design, the contribution by Unit Architects to this series focuses on a selection of their work that shares a common approach of engagement with scale, contextual symbology, material presence and considered detailing. More images and architects' description after the break.
Emerging Architects is a series of events run by Buro Happold to promote and expose the work of some of the world’s most imaginative and engaging new architects. Currently in its sixth exhibition, the series has drawn in a diverse array of talent, and promises to go from strength to strength.
As part of the exhibition, Unit Architects have radically re-modeled Buro Happold's reception; 'Our approach to the space, and the red carpet opening night event, was inspired by the grand exhibitions of the Salon de Paris, transforming the space into an exposition of elegant splendour adorned with artwork. In clearing the space of previous obstructions, we have been able to reveal and celebrate the grandeur of the room and the original interior with a simple lining that frames the ornament of the period ceiling and provides a homogenous backdrop to our work.'
Projects shown range in scale from a bike shed to the master planning of an East London urban village. The diverse typologies on display include work for St. Joseph’s Hospice in Hackney, the development of a contextual language for residential architecture in Brixton and a swing foot bridge over the Motlawa River in Gdansk.
Sponsors included Kvadrat, Tom Dixon, Pinch and Ege with the three day fit-out by GT Morgan. The exhibition is open to the public Monday to Friday from 9:30 - 17:30 at Buro Happold’s London offices, 17 Newman Street W1T 1PD.
