Swiss architecture and design publisher Birkhäuser has released a monograph of Todd Saunders’ work. Based in Bergen, Norway, award-winning Canadian architect Todd Saunders has built work in Norway, Finland and Canada. Todd Saunders: Architecture in Northern Landscapes covers his work over the last decade. The simple yet powerful aesthetic of the book mirrors the elegance of Saunders’ own architectural style and compliments the potency of the natural settings in which his work is often situated.
The book is written by Ellie Stathaki and Jonathan Bell and designed by internationally renowned Swedish graphic designer Henrik Nygren. It includes photographs by Bent René Synnevåg. The book profiles some of Saunders’ most exceptional projects, including his Aurland Lookout, Fogo Island Studios and Villa G.
Saunders’ 2012 Fogo Island art studios in Newfoundland won considerable critical acclaim, including the HISE Award for Sustainable Excellence, the AZ Award for Best Commercial Project and a recent nomination for Wallpaper Magazine’s Best Public Project of 2012. Todd Saunders was also ranked one of the world’s ‘5 Greatest Architects Under 50’ by Huffington Post and one of the top 100 architects in the world by German magazine BauNetz. The work of Saunders Architecture has been published in over 200 magazines and over 100 books.
The provocative and forward-looking preface to the book, by Domus Editor Joseph Grima, situates Saunders’ practice at a ‘turning point’ and introduces the possibility of expanding to new urban sites in the coming years. The contents of the book highlight the strong sense of northern identity at work in Saunders’ practice over the last ten years. His work combines dynamic building and material exploration with traditional craft techniques.
