Located around the Hauptbahnof in Berlin, the proposal for the Haus der Zukunft competition by Project Architect Company capitalizes on the site’s potential which lies between the Reichstag and the main railway station along the River Spree. The site is experiencing a surge in development, transforming a previously underused area into a new city-wide destination. The architects propose to use the building as an ‘urban activator’ to link the city and waterfront. More images and architects’ description after the break.
To give the waterfront a sense of destination we minimized the buildings footprint creating a new urban plaza activated with public programs – café, foyer, shop, exhibitions, performances, as well as events. These activities will also spill out into the new plaza and the water front creating a new meeting point along the River Spree and in the city.
The building is composed of large gallery exhibition, meeting and auditorium boxes that float above the new foyer and plaza and are shifted to create new unexpected and unpredictable synergies between the programs. The cafe and convention center step back at the top creating terraces allowing views towards the Reichstag and out over the city.
