The San Diego Architectural Foundation (SDAF) wants to know what you think makes San Diego’s architecture and design blossom – or stink, and is again soliciting public nominations through August 31 for projects to be considered for this year’s Orchids & Onions Awards. All San Diegans are encouraged to take a few moments to have their say about what they view as the good, the bad and the ugly in categories including Architecture, Historic Preservation, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Sustainable Design, and Miscellaneous; which covers just about everything in-between. By uploading a few photos on the SDAF’s Orchids and Onions website, along with your rationalization, you can be part of cultivating a more thoughtfully designed San Diego. More competition description after the break.
Orchids & Onions is a fundraising program of the San Diego Architectural Foundation; an independent, 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to education and the promotion of outstanding architecture, planning and urban design throughout the San Diego region. The objective of Orchids & Onions is to raise awareness, and encourage practical discourse about our environs, thereby effecting positive change and more thoughtful design decisions throughout the region. Orchids & Onions affords all San Diegans an opportunity to nominate what they believe deserves praise or critique, comment on all nominations, and even present an award by voting for the People’s Choice Orchid and Onion.
The 2011 Orchids & Onions jury will view, and rank each nomination online using a ratings system. From there, the highest ranking projects are short listed and toured in person. The 2011 O&O jury is comprised of yet another impressive list of San Diegans immersed in the arts and design communities. They are: Architect/Developer Craig Abenilla, Principal of FoundationForForm Architecture & Development; Architect Jim Gabriel, Principal at Architects Hanna Gabriel Wells; April Game, CEO & Founder of the San Diego Fine Art Society; Landscape Architect Marian Marum, Principal of Marum Partnership Landscape Architecture; Planner Brooke Peterson, Senior Associate at DCE Planning; Interior Designer Michael Soriano, Principal of ONAIROSDESIGN; and Developer Robert Watson, President of Solage Hotels & Resorts
