Now on exhibit at The Skyscraper Museum, ‘Vertical Urban Factory’ examines over 30 significant factory buildings from the turn of the 20th century to present day discussing the architectural design and structural engineering along with the evolution of mass-production technologies and social issues. Focusing primarily on the verticality of urban manufacturing the exhibition poses the question: Can factories present sustainable solutions for future self-sufficient cities?
‘Vertical Urban Factory’ is guest-curated by Nina Rappaport, architectural historian and critic and Publications Director, Yale School of Architecture with designers mgmt. design, Studio Tractor Architects, and filmmaker Eric Breitbart.
The Museum also is offering a series of corresponding programs including panel discussions, gallery tours, factory tours, and film screenings. More details of this exciting exhibit following the break!
April 6 | Contemporary Architects and Manufacturers An evening with architects & manufacturers who are featured in the Vertical Urban Factory exhibit including Andrew Kimball (Executive Director of the Brooklyn Navy Yard), Kian Goh (SUPER-INTERESTING!), consultants to the Brooklyn-based recycled glass & concrete surfaces company Icestone, and Markus Jacobi (Henn Architekten).
April 10 | Curator’s Tour with Inaki Abalos Guest-curator Nina Rappaport and Inaki Abalos of the Spanish firm Abalos Herreros (now Abalos Sentkiewicz), designers of the Madrid recycling plant Valdemingómez featured in the exhibition, lead a gallery tour and discussion on industrial architecture.
April 12 | Book Talk with Anthony Hamboussi Photographer Anthony Hamboussi discusses Newtown Creek: A Photographic Survey of New York’s Industrial Waterway (Princeton Architectural Press 2010), which extensively documents the forgotten landscape of Newtown Creek over the course of five years.
April 20 | Manufacturing Space Manufacturers discuss their space and the industrial squeeze in New York. The evening will feature Jonathon Taylor and Stephen Lynch of Caliper Studios, Williamsburg; Michael Pinkus of Sussman Corp., Long Island City; and Joseph Sultan of Chilewich, Manhattan.
MAY 2011 | Factory TOURS Details forthcoming on factory tours, led by Nina Rappaport. On-site tours will provide opportunities to look into New York’s vast stock of industrial architecture.
