The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) is hosting an exhibition of Palladio’s drawings, giving new insight into the use of drawings as a tool to record, develop and disseminate his ideas. Curated by Guido Beltramini, in collaboration with Charles Hind, Palladio at Work will be on view in the museum’s Octogonal Gallery from March 3 to May 22, 2011.

The exhibition will include a focused examination of 15 drawings by the late Italian Renaissance Master from the collections of the Royal Institute of British Architects and includes his influential book I Quattro Libri dell’Architettura (1570.) Andrea Palladio I Quattro Libri dell’Architettura s work is explored through extensive annotations in the form of diverse reference materials, images, and texts.
The strength of the drawings presented in Palladio at Work is their investigation into the architect process. Only three of the projects presented were built, and show the range of thought behind drawings that were made for personal inspiration, persuading clients and publishing. The character of the work is presented from a contemporary perspective and exhibits an exciting new context through which to analyze this body of work.
The exhibition is divided into three sections: Studying Ancient Ruins, First Ideas on Paper and Study Drawings, all of which capture Palladio’s analysis, initial ideas and the development of his ideas.
