US Census Bureau Headquarters / SOM Situated on 80 wooded acres of the Suitland Federal Center near downtown Washington, D.C., the new 2.5-million-square-foot headquarters for the U.S. Census Bureau houses all the Bureau’s 6,000 employees. The Bureau’s previous workplace model was a 1930s ideal with offices arranged along long corridors – a model so highly codified for government workplaces that entire building typologies (finger buildings, etc) were created to accommodate the idea (read more…)
AD Classics: United States Courthouse / Richard Meier & Partners Architects As an interruption of Phoenix’s Jeffersonian grid and “downtown” of glass box and faux adobe, the new federal building is a gravitational point of interest and anchor for the sprawling city of Phoenix. US Courthouse / Thomas Phifer We had the opportunity to interview Thomas Phifer yesterday in his amazing studio on Varick Street (we’ll be sharing the video with you soon!) and he was excited to tell us about the new annex for the US Courthouse the firm is currently working on. Situated in Salt Lake City, Utah, the courthouse design not only provides a functional structure, but also draws upon Phifer’s attention to nature, specifically the site’s changing seasons and sun conditions (read more…)
