Lecture Series for Professionals
Following the success of its previous three seasons, the CAA is pleased to announce the launch of Season 4 of its Continuing Professional Development Lecture series for professionals.
Season 4 – THE 2024 CAA AWARDS SHOWCASE
Season 4 of the CAA's CPD Programme will be centred as a celebration of the award winning projects and individuals from the 2024 CAA General Assembly held in August this year in Kigali, Rwanda. The Awards Showcase is a celebration of the important lifetime achievements of individuals, highlights projects at the forefront of social impact and environmental sustainability and, celebrates the work of emerging designers and students who push boundaries to deliver thought-provoking propositions addressing the climate and urban challenges of our age.
Session 1 – CAA Environmental Impact Award - Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA) by Mass Design Group, Rwanda
World Cities Day - 31 October 2024 (12:00 Noon UTC)
The first 60-minute session will be presented by Mass Design Group and focus on their project, the Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA), overall winner of the CAA Environmental Impact Award.
The Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA) serves as an exemplar alternative model for sustainable agriculture, land use, and construction worldwide. RICA will be the first climate-positive campus of its kind, leveraging a unique agricultural model, sustainably sourced materials, and off-grid power sources. The campus's embodied carbon will be ~60% less than the baseline approach for institutional works and RICA is anticipated to be climate positive by 2040, removing more carbon from that point forward than was produced from the campus' creation and ongoing operations.
The jury commended the project for "...its holistic approach and seamless integration of architecture with the principles of circular economy and its sensitivity to the local context...The project goes beyond mere construction, encompassing ecological considerations, community engagement, and education, thereby fostering a deep connection with the local culture and ecology. It stands as an exemplary model of sustainable development, demonstrating the profound impact that thoughtful, context-aware architecture can have on communities and the environment."
Join us as we hear from Mass Design Group on their dedicated climate-positive approach to architecture and as we explore the many sustainable innovations implemented at RICA, delivering positive social and environmental impacts to the community and presenting an alternative model for sustainable agriculture.
