AFFR 2024

AFFR is the place to be again this year for the best documentaries, thrilling feature films and fascinating shorts about architecture, landscape and the city! In 2024, the festival has a new programme organized around thematic sections, and with more feature films than ever before, among them the Oscar-winner The Zone of Interest - including an introductory lecture by the film's production designer, Chris Oddy, the classic film NO by Pablo Larrain, and the pre-premiere of the latest film by Andrea Arnold, Bird.

In addition, the festival is screening prize-winning documentaries such as Samuel and the Light – on the drawbacks of the arrival of electricity in a Brazilian fishing village; Bye Bye Tiberias  – in which filmmaker Lina Soualem travels back in time and place to capture the stories passed on by four generations of daring Palestinian women in her family, and opening film Charlotte's Castle, a dryly comical documentary about housing, redevelopment and activism. Added to that there's surprising shorts  in which fantasy and architecture intersect, like Warsha - winner of the best short film on Sundance - and animation film Architect A. For those who want to see Rotterdam like never before, the director and cinematographer of Santos, the Golden Calf-winning series, are coming to AFFR to offer a peek behind the scenes!

But there's also plenty for architecture lovers to see at AFFR, with portraits of such figures as Eileen Gray, Robert Venturi & Denise Scott Brown and photographer Gabriele Basilico. For everybody who wants an update on the redevelopment of the museum, there is the Boijmans debate in conjunction with the film Hanging without Walls. Suffering from choice overload? Then there's always the Architectenweb Best of AFFR on Sunday!

From 9 to 13 October 2024, LantarenVenster and Theater Rotterdam/Schouwburg are the place to be for everybody interested in architecture, in film and in the built environment. The full programme goes online and ticket sales start on Tuesday 17 September.
