2024 Robert Z. Shuman Lecture: Masafumi Yukimoto
ARCH 104, Tyler School of Art and Architecture and virtual on Zoom

Renowned architect and Tyler alum Masafumi Yukimoto (BArch '98) will deliver the 2024 Robert Z. Shuman Lecture at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture. Yukimoto, founder of Komy Studio based in Takasaki and Tokyo, Japan, will share his journey from studying at Tyler to establishing his innovative architectural and interior design practice.

Yukimoto's talk will focus on his experiences studying and working in the United States, and how he integrated American practices into his work, particularly emphasizing the concept of 'making' in architecture.

Born in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture, Yukimoto pursued architectural studies at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1998. During and after his graduation, he worked in various architecture and design-build firms in Philadelphia, including Onion Flat and MBA, where he was deeply influenced by the idea of "architecture as making." In 2006, he moved to Michigan to attend Cranbrook Academy of Art, earning his Master of Architecture degree. His postgraduate journey led him back to Japan, where he embarked on a new chapter in his career, working with renowned Japanese architects at Shigeru Ban Architects and Kengo Kuma and Associates. In 2021, he established komy studio, returning to his roots in his hometown of Takasaki City.

This lecture is free and open to the public. Join the event virtually via Zoom using the link on the event listing.
