Re-Building Communities
Organised by DOMA Initiatives Architecture Foundation, the SHIFT2024 International Architecture Conference will feature leaders from nine international architecture firms working across France, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Lebanon, New York, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. Taking place on September 21-22, 2024 at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus, the conference, themed “Rebuilding Communities” will explore the architects’ approach and solutions to contemporary issues.
The evolving relationship between architecture and community reflects the diverse conditions of the 21st century. Technology, especially social media, has fostered global virtual communities, while globalisation, migration, and climate change have shaped local, displaced, resilient, and contested communities. SHIFT2024 will discuss this paradoxical concept of community, which suggests both commonality and exclusion, and examine architecture's role in community building.
SHIFT2024 is the fifth edition of DOMA Initiatives’ conference series, with the debut event held in 2018 featuring the Norwegian transdisciplinary practice, Snøhetta. The conference convenes architects, key players, and emerging built environment practitioners from across Asia and internationally to discuss contemporary issues and innovations shaping today’s built environment.

Notable works by the speakers include the transformation of a 1920s beer distillery into a contemporary art museum at Argo Contemporary Art Museum & Cultural Center in Tehran, Iran, awarded the 2022 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, The Hive in Singapore, the Bima Microlibrary in Bandung, Indonesia and Le Berlier, a 50-meter-tall residential timber tower in Paris.
In conjunction with this year’s conference, DOMA Initiatives and the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (AKAA) will hold an exclusive exhibition launch presenting the winning projects of the AKAA 2022. The launch, held at the newly completed GDP Campus on September 21, 2024, will feature a panel discussion on the rigour and process of nomination, selection and evaluation of nominated projects for the award and the impact on the award to the finalist and recipients of the AKAA. Panelists include award recipients, technical reviewers and AKAA Director Farrokh Derakhshani.
