"Here, we need to shape a future national park that integrates natural ecology and human history through forward-looking and innovative design and construction methods." Natural mountains, ancient village hydrology, Zhuzi culture, tea hometown, Wuyi Mountain is located as the "roof of East China" Huanggang mountain. Wuyi Mountain is the most important mountain in the southeast coast of China.
Endowed with superior ecological and natural conditions, Nanping is the only city in China that is home to world cultural and natural heritage sites and national park, boasting unparalleled cultural and natural ecological value.
In August 2023, the International Competition focused on the target positioning of Wuyi Mountain as a world-class tourist destination and meeting room of Fujian Province, highlighting the natural and humanistic beauty of Wuyi Mountain National Park to the world. Driven by creativity and innovation, the Competition intends to solicit architectural and planning improvement proposals from around the globe for 14 nodes.
At the judging meeting, the organizers of the competition put forward their expectations for the judging: "We encourage the design unit to make good use of the unique natural conditions and cultural resources of Wuyi Mountain, through the understanding of the natural, cultural and ecological unique resources of each node of the scenic byway, with the most distinctive and attractive nature and humanity of the national park as the starting point, to provide a 'circle' design concept for each node, so as to attract the arrival of mass tourists."
On October 18-19, 2023, International Creative Design Competition of Wuyi Mountain National Park No. 1 Scenic Byway was held in Wuyishan City. The scheme review committee is composed of 7 well-known experts in the industry and 2 representatives of the owner. Li Xiaojiang was selected as the review team leader by the members of the review committee.
The ten-mile long river is quiet and beautiful, the peach land is fresh and natural, and the Wuyi Mountain has a marvelous landform showing a diversified site environment." In a variety of contexts, we have witnessed innovative responses from teams - both an expression of simplicity and an expression of bold innovation.
The main design content of the International Creative Design Competition for the Concept Plan of Ecological Science Popularization Observation Station and Post Station includes the concept plan design of 6 node related to Yueliang Bay Service Station , Qinglong Waterfall Science Lookout and Xianfeng Ridge Science Observation Tower, TAO (Trace Architecture Office) yuan Valley, Anran Sci-tech Courtyard, and Aotou Village Lookout. This design competition should systematically consider the core design concept and vision, functional format composition, architectural concept scheme, spatial intention, traffic flow line, landscape system and other aspects, and propose creative comprehensive solutions. At the same time, it emphasizes the principles of ecological priority, protection priority, innovation, human resource promotion and feasibility. Here is the shortlist of the winners:

According to the problems and challenges of the Wuyi Mountain National Park No. 1 Scenic Byway, Li Xiaojiang, the expert review leader, pointed out: "Designers need to pay attention to the historical research value of Wuyi Mountain, and pay attention to the relationship between the building volume and natural ecology." Hua Li, founder and principal architect of TAO (Trace Architecture Office) , said: "Apart from focusing on the proposal itself, we will also judge the team's overall design literacy and deepening ability." The expert review committee reached a consensus on several value dimensions such as the creativity of the proposal, the originality of the concept, the economic landing, and the ecological sustainability, and determined the winning scheme for each selection point after voting.
The collective insight of exceptional designers has introduced a plethora of diverse solutions to these distinct challenges and difficulties. I am confident that through this competition, we can effectuate systematic and positive transformations in Wuyi Mountain. Each participating design has exhibited both an innovative spirit and professionalism, offering numerous valuable suggestions and concepts for the future development of the Wuyi Mountain National Park No. 1 Scenic Byway.
