The Emerging New York Architects Competition proposal, ‘The Greenhouse Transformer’, which received an honorable mention, is a typology for urban farming with the purpose of creating environments for learning year round within the community of West Harlem. PRAUD‘s main goal is to integrate life cycle components of food production into a building that is also a catalyst for activity in the area and allows visitors to engage in the program in a more efficient way. Launched just last week, the UrbanCollectiveModular Building Design Challenge 2012, open to all architects, engineers, designers and students – individually or in groups, challenges participants to design a contemporary modular home. throughout the world. The competition aims to further dialogue within the design community and build interest about prefabrication and modular design but also to create contemporary and affordable modular designs to aid in combating the widely discussed housing affordability crisis in Australia. Matteo Cainer Architects shared with us their proposal for the Museum Santiago Ydáñez in the town of Puente de Génave, Spain which expresses the relationship between the work of the artists, the site and the building program. Through an engaging, energetic and permeable design, they conceive a musical rhythm where the new museum becomes a reactive and interactive part of its landscaped setting through the intersection of the integrated and sculpted grids. Coming up in March, the AIA Grassroots Conference will be featuring the Young Architects Forum (YAF), a knowledge community of AIA composed of architects licensed less than 10 years, who will be holding ‘Summit20′ at the District Architecture Center in Washington, D.C. during the conference on March 6-7. This is to commemorate YAF’s 20 year anniversary and to identify the top ten issues affecting young architects today. They will also be discussing immediate and long term action plans that AIA-YAF can take addressing the specific needs of young architects. The two day summit with panel discussions and open dialogue among approximately 50 young architect leaders from the nation will conclude with an outcomes presentation at the conference. (WMIG?) celebrates your achievements and the interdisciplinary teamwork required to meet the 2030 Challenge. Through live interviews with shortlisted project teams on April 18, WMIG? will educate and inspire the larger design community with creative solutions for sustainability.
Assael Architecture recently shared its vision for the Dreamland Margate, one of Britain’s most famous seaside amusement parks, into whether Thanet District Council will be allowed to compulsorily purchase the former fun park. Assael is the fifth architectural practice to be appointed and the only one to protect and reuse the Grade II* Cinema and Scenic Railway as part of a low density housing scheme designed to attract inward investment. Assael’s scheme for Margate Town Center Regeneration Company (MTCRC) will provide a vibrant cultural and amusement hub surrounded by its residential scheme of about 474 homes, comprising mostly high quality terraced houses. The ‘Now Boarding: Fentress Airports + the Architecture of Flight’ exhibition, opening July 15 until October 7 at the Denver Art Musuem, will take visitors on a multi-media tour of airport design of the past, present and future. Visitors will journey through six airports designed by Denver-based Fentress Architects, encountering sketches, renderings, photographs, video installations and large models of these technically advanced public spaces. The upcoming Tour of Architects in the Puget Sound region of Washington State sponsored by AIA Seattle will take place from March 17-25. Four separate tours will take place over the two weekends, with architects on site to meet with tour guests in addition to conducting tours. The projects featured on the tour are primarily residential, encompassing a wide variety of styles ranging from modern, universally design urban lofts, to remodeled min-century ramblers. Some of the other typologies featured include a memorial project dedicated to the memory of Japanese Americans interned during WWII, an equestrian facility and an award winning Fire Station.

ShaGa studio, in collaboration with MaDG, shared with us their proposal for The Lantern, a new metro station and public arena for the future extension of Metro Line 1 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Shortlisted from over 130 entries in the Station20 competition, their design fluctuates between scales, creating a strong iconic image towards a southern public plaza while providing a soft landscape link as a northern station entrance. Designed by BudCud, the Kyiv Islands masterplan proposal, one of the finalists in the open international urban competition, responds to the ‘genius loci’. In the wild area, it is humble and almost invisible, but where the islands make visual connection to the city, their project gets an urban manner. The areas of different nature preservation status were distinguished with the implementation of loops, stripes, paths and objects – micro islands that create networks. Ajman University of Science & Technology will hosting a four-day workshop by architects Mrs. Elke Delugan-Meissl and Mr. Roman Delugan of Delugan Meissl Associated Architects – DMAA February 18-22. DMAA is known for their works involving urban development and interior and industrial design. Their most recent award was for the IF Product Design Award 2012 for their IYON LED Spotlight Series for Zumtobel. In addition, Delugan Meissl will hold a public lecture and open an exhibition for their work during the period of the workshop at the university. The University of Architecture and Urbanism “Ion Mincu” of Bucharest will be celebrating its 120th anniversary this year in an ample event known as the Romanian Convention of Architecture and Design (ROCAD), that is going to take place at Parliament Palace in Bucharest from May 16-18. ROCAD, who are media partners of ArchDaily will offer a unique concept – a balanced mix of conferences and exhibitions – has created a stir among the architects and designers from Romania and thus over 1200 professionals at the May event are expected. The Buell Center will be hosting a public forum entitled What Is Foreclosed? Housing, Suburbanization, and Crisis, which marks the opening of Foreclosed: Rehousing the American Dream, an exhibition co-organized by the Museum of Modern Art and the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture. The event will take place on Saturday, February 18, 2012, in the Low Memorial Library Rotunda at Columbia University. An interdisciplinary group of scholars, activists, and architects, will debate the future of American housing, cities and suburbs and the cultural narratives that have accompanied the home foreclosure crisis and the economic crisis more generally.
