The WAPW Academic Association together with the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology invite you to the next lecture in the "About Architecture" series. Our guests will be architects Małgorzata Kuciewicz and Simone De Iacobis from the CENTRALA studio. The studio was founded in 2001. It changed for years and today it is created by Małgorzata Kuciewicz and Simone de Iacobis. The goal of the studio is to initiate a debate on architecture, inspire interdisciplinary activities related to architecture and design, and to create artistic projects inviting you to discuss the condition of urban design in Poland. Svetlana Kana Radević’s architecture is a radical act of mediation. Rising to prominence in post-war Yugoslavia, her buildings speak on all scales, engaging geo-political and social complexities. Drawing from knowledge of materiality and vernacular traditions within her native Montenegro (formerly Yugoslavia), her work filters modernism’s globalized forces through an intimate, place-based lens. Radević’s civic spaces re-centered provincial knowledge and facilitated a socially-progressive public sphere within the Yugoslav socialist state.

Hadi Teherani approaches his architecture and design projects holistically. Born in Teheran and raised in Hamburg, he is a prolific and versatile designer whose works can be found in Germany and all over the world. His projects have been recognized with internationally renowned awards for their ecologically-sound sustainability and holistic approach. Maybe that’s the reason for his constant stream of ideas: he sees the process of creation as a reaction to what he sees, senses and feels.
Designing from personal perception and inspiration, Teherani's bathroom concept for the AXOR DISTINCTIVE project was born. When asked by the brand how he would define his very personal “bathroom with personality”, the architect answered with a design that reflects an individual idea of this space, derived from this self-image — in its daily use, its design and its furnishing.
Prefabricated, modular timber construction has emerged as a particularly suitable way for building in existing structures – especially in confined urban spaces. Gaps between buildings can be closed and older ones can be extended in a short time and with little energy and space expenditure. Compared to other building materials, wood is also very light, which is especially important when expanding existing buildings with low static reserves.
The ICONIC AWARDS: Innovative Architecture focuses on projects that show how existing buildings can be revitalised, how building materials can be used in a variety of ways, and the innovative climate concepts that can be implemented to provide valuable impetus for more sustainable construction. Recycling, secondary use and appropriately extending the service life – these are the core principles of sustainability, which of course also apply to buildings.
Part two of "Stories of Lisbon's Light" takes place in Cascais, a vibrant seaside resort an hour away from Lisbon, hidden on the westernmost tip of the European continent. Right on the Riviera Portuguesa, architect Bruno Novo gave his modern, minimalist touch to a holiday villa where natural light plays the leading part. Focusing on natural elements and minimal touches that open up the spaces inside and outside, the house is made with a family holiday in mind.
Spaceships and space environments can be seen as analogues of modern, high-density, technology-driven cities. Design, ideas and technologies for space can have an immediate positive impact on the development of cities and homes on earth.
We have to think of a new relationship between humans, their habitats, transport methods and the environment. This valuable know-how can be applied to design our homes and cities on earth and thus create a more sustainable world.

Building on the success of the previous two virtual Spring Conferences, the themes of AIAISC'23 will be Detail & Storytelling. Presenters will focus on describing a project through the evolution of key Details, or Storytelling as part of the design process.

Background and Purpose of the Competition ● We intend to turn the Gwangmyeong-Siheung Public Housing District (the “District”) into a more futuristic urban town that provides its residents with more jobs, better housing and transportation, as well as more eco-friendly and safer environment. To this end, we launched this Competition to select the best proposal with a great urban master plan and implementation strategies for a multi-dimensional urban space planning for the specialty areas. ● Through this Competition, we plan to come up with the most promising draft of urban master plan exclusively devised for the District to enrich the project site with a great theme, symbolic significance and artistry, tapping into diverse and creative ideas.
The Open Ideas National Competition 2022 on Improving Liveability of Small Houses organised by Habitat Forum INHAF in partnership with CREDAI Pune Metro seeks to engage practising architects, interior designers, planners, engineers and senior students of these faculties; related Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs); Government agencies; Professionals working on slum-upgrading and slum rehabilitation, and others with innovative ideas in developing proposals on Improving the Liveability of Small Low-cost Housing being constructed by public agencies and private builders under the PMAY (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana) and other affordable housing schemes and projects.

Since Japan and the West began exchanging ideas in the mid-19th century, Japanese design sensibilities—from elaborate kimono garments and meticulously raked gardens to lavish compositions of ukiyo-e woodblock prints—have had wide appeal across Europe and the United States. Often ornate yet minimalistic, Japanese design embodies numerous visual approaches underpinning the notion of “just right” or “just enough,” known as hodo-hodo. While no single element characterizes the entirety of Japanese design culture, many scholars attribute the spectrum of Japanese design to cultural, social and spiritual practices deeply grounded in Japan’s history that continue to be observed in Japanese design practices today. Featuring a discussion with Taku Satoh, one of Japan’s most critically acclaimed contemporary designers, alongside two internationally recognized authorities on Japanese design sensibilities, Linda Hoaglund (bilingual filmmaker and cultural producer) and Sarah Teasley (Professor of Design, RMIT University), this live webinar will explore the underlying aesthetic and cultural roots essential for understanding the essence of Japanese design.
