De Leon & Primmer Architecture Workshop were challenged with the residential interior renovation of an existing 1970 4,200 sqf home. The owners, a young couple interested in collecting contemporary art, asked the architects to transform the character of the existing interior creating a balanced home and gallery with warmth and neutrality.

Today OMA announced the appointment of Iyad Alsaka and David Gianotten as new partners in the company. Architectural and research projects in North Africa, the Middle East and Asia have been increasing for OMA and this recent appointment signifies their investment to grow and develop projects within these regions.
The Mies van der Rohe Society recently released their newly designed website. Some of the features we like are the detailed building biographies, sketches, models, 3D renderings, and photographs that showcase the buildings Mies designed.
This years architectural events in New York are bound to have a meaningful effect on the years to come; the decision by NYU to add another tower complementing I.M Pei’s existing Silver Towers complex (rather than their initial plan to demolish them), the opening of the first section of Brooklyn Bridge Park coupled with the completion of the High Line has re-established New York City as a key model to reference when it comes to designing urban public space, and finally construction began on Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, by Louis Kahn, to name a few.

Jean Nouvel was chosen as the lead urban architect and coordinator for the Seguin Island project in July of 2009. Here we are sharing with you the Ateliers Jean Nouvel team master plan for Seguin Island in Boulogne-Billancourt, France.
A diverse group of programs will make up the spaces, total surface area of 300,000 sqm, including cultural, retail, social facilites, parks, gardens, terraces serving as a destination for both residents and tourists. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2010 and final completion is expected for the end of 2023.

The Light Screen is a site specific installation located in a walnut grove at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park in Indianapolis. The proposed project was a finalist in the “Great Ideas” competition sponsored by the Arts Council of Indianapolis, and builds on an architectural installation previously completed by the entrant in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2006 – Light Sail (selected images of which are also included here). 3LHD recently shared with us this video of Zamet Centre. The film combines photographs by Domagoj Blazevic, Damir Fabijanic, 3LHD archive, aerial footage from Hrg, and videographers Mladen Kostanjsek and Marko Stanic. Directed by Vladislav Knezevic, the video editor was Mario Kalogjera and the sound design was done by Vjeran Salamon.
Salvaged Layers; a Collaborative Site Specific Performance project was an interdisciplinary collaboration between two groups of students from separate Universities. The studio challenged students to explore issues of craft, making and place through a series of full scale built interventions in a historic Indianapolis theatre which had been gutted in anticipation of a planned renovation. The raw state of the theatre’s interior gave students a rich and evocative palette to engage while simultaneously liberating them from the conventional notions of stage and audience.

Here is a short clip from SO-IL about their MoMA P.S.1 installation in motion. Pole Dance was the 2010 P.S.1 Competition winner, and ArchDaily visited the installation and interviewed the Brooklyn based firm. We featured the video interview with SO-IL last month, take a look.
Located in Kenmore, Washington the new Bastyr University Student Village accommodates 132 students amongst 11 three-story free-standing cottages. The design-rich and eco-friendly village, by CollinsWoerman, was originally designed to meet LEED Gold, however the project exceeded expectations and earned LEED Platinum certification while being completed under budget and ahead of schedule. The student village achieved 34 percent energy savings over more traditional multifamily projects and diverted 97 percent of construction waste from landfills through careful teamwork and planning. The award is the top honor the USGBC makes for multifamily projects.

Here’s a video about Unsolicited Architecture, a collaborative workshop initiated by Studio-X Rio + NAI in Rio de JaneiroBrazil. In a 24 hour time period four teams were formed, four neighborhoods were explored (they each explored the neighborhood where the local architect’s office is located), held a brainstorming session, and then presented their ideas – zero clients, zero budget.
The 40 metre Spencer Dock Bridge with its fluid lines and undulating concrete surface takes trams, traffic and pedestrians across the Royal Canal. Amanda Levete Architects design for the span bridge peels down the edges of the deck to reveal a space for pedestrians to pause and take in views of the dock and Linear Park which is currently under construction.

ArchDaily would like to wish Oscar Niemeyer a Happy 103rd Birthday today. In 1988, at age 81, Niemeyer was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize, together with American architect Gordon Bunshaft. Setting the pace for us all, Niemeyer continues to practice architect from his office in Rio de Janeiro, with ongoing projects in Brazil and Spain. He even recently composed the song Tranquilo com a Vida, download and listen here.

This video shares some insight into the Helsinki Design Lab Studio on Sustainability. The Studio spent a week together sketching ideas for a national strategy for carbon neutrality in the built environment, eventually developing 10 recommendations as a starting point for redesigning the problem comprehensively.
