Edges, whether defining physical space or conceptual territories, provide a charged zone for interaction. The edge—solid or porous, fixed or fluctuating—formalizes difference and shapes relationships between different groups. The articulation of these zones becomes a political act, bringing conditions to public view, creating allegiances or separations, and generating dissonance through heterogeneity.
For this issue of Paprika! we seek work - written, artistic, or architectural- that investigates the operative potential present in the act of articulating edges. Potential topics for exploration include: What are the implications of spatializing difference through the insertion of architectural or urban edges? Are these boundaries self generated, or imposed by external actors, and what effect does that have on their productive potentials? How might the liminal be activated as a generator of progressive politics? Where do edges begin and end, and who comes to define these stubborn yet slippery boundaries?
Paprika! is an independent publication run by students at the Yale School of Architecture. Issues are published weekly, each coinciding with a lecture. Volume III, Issue 07 will be published on November 09, 2017, on the date of the keynote address by Richard Sennett during the Environment, Reconsidered, 1967-2017 Symposium.
