Kengo Kuma Unveils "Green Hospital" for Tokyo

Traditionally, hospital environments are internalized, cut off from the natural world, and structured around efficiency, despite its affect on patient health. Moving beyond this, Kengo Kuma & Associates have unveiled plans to replaced an aging medical center in Setagaya, Tokyo, with a “modest,” “actively open” hospital centered around a landscaped courtyard garden.

The new Seijo Kinoshita Hospital (Green Hospital), planned for completion in 2017, breaks away from uniformity to offer a unique set of common spaces and private patient rooms that are directly connected to nature and lit by natural light.

Wood louvers on the building’s exterior are strategically placed to provide shade and obscure views to ensure privacy.
