In 2001 Boeri Studio won the international competition for the design of the new office building of Rizzoli, in Crescenzago, located at north-east of Milan.The plan includes 90.000 sqm of built area, divided between large areas of building renovation (55.000 sqm) and the construction of two new buildings (35.000 sqm), one of which is the building destinated to the offices, named as Building “C.”
The building is composed of a lower 5 floors (and a basement) and a main tower of 12 floors, with a height of about 80 meters. The development of the building floor plan draws to an open courtyard, facing the existing buildings to be recovered, and joins with one of its sides at Via Angelo Rizzoli, which is the entrance to the building itself and to the inner square.
The building structure is made entirely of armed concrete in the lower body while it is mixed in the body of the tower, where the concrete core engages a frame of steel girders and pillars . All the floors are made of modular elements called predalles . The entire body of the building is coated evenly on all sides by a double skin, consisting of modular metal panels internally insulated, and a layer of outer coating glass sheets supported at about 20 cm away from the facade.
On each floor the ribbon windows "cut " the modular coating, leaving only a few scattered points of continuity.The plates of the second coating of skin are affected by color variations obtained through layers of silk-screen prints , which give the facades a shimmering vibration depending on the degree and intensity of solar incidence . Similarly, the reflection of light on the metal elements of support, contributes to accentuate this effect .
The coating of the building plans are made with an artificial stone material, called "acryterm”, slabs of dimensions similar to the glass coating. The monochrome exterior cladding materials of the building are what characterize the architecture of it. A large body of plastic, simple in the geometry that changes it’s facede depending on the time of day, weather conditions and seasons.
About 1,100 people inhabit the interior of the building on a daily basis, organized in modular offices and open-space environments, characterized by flexible systems and innovative lightweight partitions. The glass is also characterized by a serigraphy design with vertical stripes , that goes inside the building and draws partitions plans, giving perspectives and different points of view for this comercial building.
