Text description provided by the architects. In a residential suburban area on the outskirts of Seville is located the medical office that the Andalusian Health Service has put in hands of the architecture buffet, which intends to use part of the neighborhood’s association facilities meeting quite an adjusted budget. Without any architectural landmark and the idea of constructing a new building with distinctive institutional features, all domestic architectural elements have been deleted: the door, window, floor height,… All elements are abstracted in order to reach a language almost minimalist and very different from the surrounding buildings. This abstraction simplifies the constructing system and adjusts the material budget.
The project, after analysis of the required program, was focused on providing the future doctor’s office with the features of a public building, as well as applying different sustainability criteria with the ambition of optimizing the possibilities the location had to offer. It results interesting to mention how an annex arises, extending the building both in stories and height and fleeing domestic scale of a one story building which overlooks the buildings complex. The natural and artificial lighting also denotes a careful study and sensibility towards energy efficiency criteria.
The simplicity and double function of the elements are raised during the development of the whole building as an added value, and intend to contribute principals of efficiency, economy and durability to architecture. Something that may seem insignificant as security acquires an important role, expanded metal is settled from floor to ceiling as coating, acquiring a double role: safety and aesthetics, dematerializing the window space and obtaining a more abstract language according to the institutional use. The lacquered woodwork that coats a complete wall acoustically qualifies this determined space, as well as collecting and storing various technical uses and consulting service. It serves as a storage locker, telecommunications core, pass-service area, acoustics and soundproofing wall.
Looking for easy maintenance and, why not, a dialogue regarding the surrounding the materials used in the area such us exposed concrete, fertile soil or hydraulic lime pargeting painted white.
