Human Experience and Place: Sustaining Identity is the latest title in the successful and prestigious Architectural Design (AD) series. Officially launched at the Sustaining Identity Symposium in London’s Victoria & Albert Museum at the end of November, this issue features both well-known and emerging practices worldwide.
By drawing on examples from across the world, this issue of AD demonstrates that, in a time of commercial globalisation, it is possible for architects, designers and engineers to create outstanding buildings that retain a sense of local identity, both in terms of cultural heritage and the conservation of the environment.
Including a keynote article authored by Juhani Pallasmaa - one of Finland’s most distinguished architects and architectural thinkers - which discusses ‘Newness, Tradition and Identity: Existential Content and Meaning in Architecture’, other contributors to this issue include Peter Buchanan, Ricky Burdett, Farrokh Derakshani, Murray Fraser, Jayne Merkel and Peter Zumthor who explore core themes such as identity and the economy, scale, sustainable technologies and education.
A select number of architects are also featured, including an extended article on Pritzker Prize 2012 winner, Wang Shu.
In celebrating architecture which is culturally rooted and sympathetic to the local environment, Human Experience and Place: Sustaining Identity covers a highly topical and timely subject matter and this issue will be appreciated by anyone keen to develop their knowledge in finding an alternative pathway to the design of buildings.
