The aim of Bohuon Bertic Architectes for their gymnasium in Plabennec, France is to create an efficient tool in regard to the building’s use as well as for the surrounding area, making the project friendly, enjoyable, serene and identifiable. Characterized by horizontality, the site is a vast, dominant plateau that immerses the user in the scenery. The project interprets and synthesizes the characteristics of the place and programmatic datum resulting in two fundamental elements: the base and the volume-signal. The pragmatic management of the site considers solar exposition, uses, access and prevailing winds. Natural light is the most valuable material in a sports center. It is this that gives to the sports complex its particularity and contributes to its comfort. A double wrapping treatment, diffusing inside (polycarbonate) and filtering outside (net), allows a natural light management and frees from artificial lighting.
Opening the building towards the scenery in all orientations, every room benefits from large gaps on the outside; on sports facilities, the balcony towards the East for the gymnastics room, and towards the city for the tennis table room. Accessibility is allowed by a fluctuated floor. It could be an hand-rail, an embankment, a bench, a conch, or something other which is always part of a continual and fluent movement. The base brings a real integration into the surrounding area and increases the building’s inertia.
